I understand where Taichi's fear comes from, but he is overthinking it. Just because his mom is homophobic, doesn't mean the rest of the people around them are! Regardless of the setting -- Japan or elsewhere -- there is a culture of tolerance... passers-by won't throw rocks at them for holding hands.
But it's really hard to face that fear of judgement. A lot of people go through that everyday, it's quite difficult to pass it off as nothing in just a breeze. Especially since they experienced it first-hand, more so from Taichi's own mother. Taichi must have been scared that Nao will have to go through that.

EXACTLY. FEAR IS ABSOLUTELY NORMAL KSKFLSFJDB and Taichi should just be upfront about it, lol. It is obvious that homesexual relationships have social constraints, but even hetero ones have hurdles too. Taichi is beating himself by thinking of what might happen and is dodging the fact that he is hurting Nao by excluding him.
