He didn't, it's in the first or second page of the author's note at the end. The mangaka couldn't decide whether to kill him or keep him alive, so she just left it at that scene.

after reading this story over again i dont think souma die he went and sit beside the sakura tree after what happen to him i think he's representing the sakura tree because after souma slash and stab it. it still live well thats what i would like to believe this story is so good but sad:-(
