Even though I like yaoi, I can still enjoy other genres, like yuri, especially when it comes to something like this where you can really see the characters develop their relationship. With yaoi it's more about peeking behind the curtain of a situation that I know nothing about because I'm female and, as far as I know, straight, so because it's such foreign territory for me to explore, it's exciting and kind of hot. But with manga like this, I feel like I'm more connected to the story because I can identify with the character's feelings more closely. So, for me, it's more about the characters and how the story's written than picking one genre over another.
